Just before The Civic opened it’s doors in March 1999, the Artistic Director Bríd Dukes was joined by amongst others Donal O’Kelly and Mark O’Rowe for the RTE Radio 1 programme The Arts Show with Mike Murphy (‘probably the most important single outlet for coverage of the Arts in Ireland’ – Irish Times). That April The Civic presented Catalpa written and performed by Donal O’Kelly and so began a new and exciting era for the development of the arts in the South Dublin area.
One of our most enduring relationships has been with Fishamble: The New Play Company. Their commitment to new writing and touring has resulted in over 15 productions (see list below) touring to The Civic and the development of a strong appetite for new writing and work in the area.
