What We Do
The Civic is located in Tallaght at the end of the RED Luas line, at the northside of The Square Shopping Centre and beside South Dublin County Council headquarters and the County Library.
Our venue has loads to offer patrons, from theatre, music, dance, opera and comedy. We strive to provide a varied programme to suit all.
We have two performance spaces, the Main Auditorium and the Loose End Studio. The larger Main Auditorium can seat 282 people and the Loose End can seat up to 70 people.
Our venue has a great restaurant on site called the Interval Bistro & Bar which serves breakfast, lunch and pre-theatre menus. It’s a lovely peaceful haven to enjoy coffees, pastries and complimentary WIFI away from the hustle and bustle.
There are two foyer spaces in the venue. In the upstairs foyer we have a collection of art works on loan from ARTzheimers. Twenty artists have been commissioned, each interpreting a specific brief – for ARTzheimer’s is not art for arts sake; this illness has and will touch the lives of many of us. Our Mission Statement
To enrich the lives of all of the people in South Dublin County and beyond, by crafting and staging a range of shared cultural experiences that invite and provoke a meaningful journey of transformation.
History
The Civic, opened on 23rd March 1999, a project of South Dublin County Council and also grant aided by the Department of Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands. The first production at The Civic Tallaght was Howie the Rookie by Mark O’Rowe, directed by Mike Bradwell and starring Aidan Kelly and Karl Shiels.
Since opening we have developed relationships with most Irish theatre companies and most opera, contemporary dance, ballet and children’s theatre companies, developing healthy audiences for these.
We are particularly proud of our co-productions – to date we’ve produced; or co-produced 30 plays, involving new Irish writing. We have hosted wonderful international productions, fantastic local work, and we have had some terrific nights of music on stage at the Civic.
