We are greatly sadden to hear of the passing of Brian Friel today. His many works including Philadelphia, Here I Come!, Lovers, The Gentle Island, The Freedom of the City, Aristocrats, Faith Healer, Translations, Making History, Dancing at Lughnasa, Molly Sweeney, Give Me Your Answer Do! and The Home Place, have earned him a place as one of the great playwrights of the 20th Century.
Over the years we have presented a great number of his works to our audiences in South Dublin and we know his canon of work will continue to be produced for years to come.
The Civic will be taking part in a co-ordinated show of respect in the form a round of applause before “curtain up” as a tribute for Brian Friel across the city tonight. Don Wycherley, director of Hooked!, will be saying a few words tonight along with Helen Jordan before her performance of ‘Being Alive’
Brian Friel will be deeply missed. May he rest in peace.
