New stories exploring the human heart beating within Ireland’s International Protection System developed through the ‘Seven Scenes’ methodology
Under the artistic direction of Newton Barabara, mentored by Veronica Coburn and Phil Kingston, Seven Scenes uses a unique structure to help people navigate the complex realities of change and integration. Seven Scenes brings people together, to talk about their lives, their worries, the challenges they face. Seven Scenes asks people what stories they think need to be told. And Seven Scenes helps groups to shape those stories in a dedicated number of scenes paying attention to character, place, and circumstances. Seven Scenes is about community. Seven Scenes is about overcoming adversity. Seven Scenes is about hope and joy. In coming together to tell our stories, in shaping our stories to share with others, positive change occurs.
The Price of Love and The Empty Chair is the seventh Seven Scenes programme. Previous Seven Scenes stories include The Escape, Halfway to Heaven, The Journey, The Unveiling, The Web, Double Life and Between Two Graves.
The Price of Love by The Civic Theatre’s Seven Scenes Integration Group follows the gripping journey of Kofi and Siobhan—two individuals from entirely different worlds who are forced to navigate a complex landscape of prejudice, addiction, and systemic barriers in their fierce fight for a shared future.
The Empty Chair by The Cookstown Seven Scenes Drama Group is an act of remembrance for those lost within the system. A tender solo performance marking those who disappear, those moved overnight, those deported, and those whom the journey claims. A lament for all those lost in a temporary world. Directed by Newton Barabara.

About the Seven Scenes Project:
The Seven Scenes Project is an inter-agency initiative dedicated to fostering social cohesion through professional artistic practice. By bridging the gap between IPAS graduates and the Irish arts community, the project creates high-impact theatre that addresses the most pressing social challenges of our time.
Funded by the Department of Justice, Home Affairs and Migration, supported by the Civic Theatre, the Abbey Theatre, the Irish Refugee Council and South Dublin County Council, this production is the culmination of a 9-week intensive integration program. It stands as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of art to foster genuine social cohesion in modern Ireland.
