We had a chat with Tom Hope of The Young Orchestral Pops (YOPS) Orchestra who take to the stage of The Civic on Sunday 14th May.
Can you give us some background about how the Orchestra began?
The Young Orchestral Pops (YOPS) Orchestra was set up in 2002 under the direction of Kitty Dalligan, to offer students the opportunity to play film music, traditional music, popular classics and newly commissioned works. YOPs have two orchestras a Junior orchestra (Primary School ) and a Senior orchestra (Secondary School ).
How many members do you have?
We have 90 members between the two orchestras
Have any of your performers pursued professional careers in music?
Yes some are studying music performance degrees at third level.
How do you decide which music to perform in your concerts?
The programme is prepared in consultation with the students and staff.
How do young people join YOPS?
Auditions are held every March/April . Students can apply on line at www.yops-ireland.com
What can audiences expect from the show at the Civic?
A variety of music from Films , Beauty and the Beast, Colonel Bogey March, Pirates of the Caribbean and popular Clocks(Coldplay) and Irish Music.
