Written by the French playwright, Moliere, ‘The Misanthrope’ is a 17th-century comedy that was first performed in June 1666. After Moliere’s two previous plays ‘Tartuffe’ and ‘Don Juan’ had been banned by the French Government, this work was a real tongue in cheek, toned down play, while clearly displaying his masterful humour, irony, repartee, sarcasm, and wit, exposing the hypocrisies of French aristocratic society. It is a classic farce full of satire.
