‘Sive’ is set against the harsh poverty and difficult times of 1950s Ireland. ‘Sive’ tells the story of a young and beautiful orphan who lives with her uncle Mike, his wife Mena and his mother Nanna. While Nanna dotes on her orphaned granddaughter, ‘Sive’, Mena plots with the local matchmaker Thomasheen Séan Rua to marry the young girl off to an old local farmer Séan Dóta for the promise of land and a chance to escape from poverty. Sive has become an Irish classic and one of the nation’s best loved plays. It is a story about a battle of generations, exploitation, greed, love and tragedy all told with John B’s lyrical dialogue and great Irish humour.
