Events for Black History Month will take place at The Civic 24 – 26 October
This October, We invite you to join us in a celebration of Black History Month curated by Esosa Ighodaro (Associate Artist at The Civic). Through art, performance, storytelling and discussion, we ask:
Whose History? Who gets to tell the story? Who owns the story? Whose story?

Gallery Exhibition “Whose Story?” - A Visual Exploration
For the month of October
Free, drop-in exhibition invites visitors to step into a space where history and imagination intertwine.
Featuring the work of Abi Ighodaro, Grace Miazoloh and Tatiana Smith St Kitts.

Black History Month – Black & Irish

Comedy, Dance, and Film
An evening of stand-up comedy, dance, and short films by Black and Irish artists. At its core, exploring our experiences as Black and Irish artists through humour and creativity. Celebrating a range of Black Irish identity. Comedy from Yemi Edebiri, Song and Stand-up performed by Tierra Porter. A dance piece exploring the duality of identity by Favour Odusola. A new short comedic play by Steve Hartland and a captivating story by Aesha Tandy telling of a unique expat experience where the expected story was not as expected. Alongside poetry by Neltah Chadamoyo and short films by Grace Miazoloh, Jonahtan Heed and Esosa Ighodaro.
We will also be presenting the performance reading of the companion piece to the gallery installation “Rice and Bean: 2 Kitchens” verbatim poetry by Tanya Bridgeman.
The evening features performances by Yemi Edebiri, Favour Odusola, Neltah Chadamoyo, Grace Miazoloh, Steve Hartland, Chioma Ugonabo, Leah Minto, Gabriel Adewusi, Tierra Porter, Aesha Tandy.
Following the performances, there will be an open panel discussion with some of the artists on creativity, identity, and representation.

Black History Month – Reimagining the Story

Drama, Song & Storytelling
An evening presenting new original works by Black and Irish creatives. With poetry expressing stories of who we are and where we have come from, and where we hope to go. A short play by Naima Mohamud, exploring ideas around long-term relationships, time and repetition. And music by upcoming rapper, Credence, and singer, Pixie Nova, with accompaniment by a live 2 piece band.
We will also be presenting the performance reading of the companion piece to the gallery installation “Rice and Bean: 2 Kitchen” verbatim poetry by Tanya Bridgeman.
The evening features performances by Victor Adejobi, Pixie Nova, Brooklyn Leah Minto, Gabriel Adewusi, Tierra Porter, Favour Odusola, Felispeaks and Dafe Orugbo.
Following the performances, there will be an open panel discussion on storytelling and the future of Black Irish narratives
