The Civic is supported by our volunteer usher programme.  The programme was first developed from our youth arts schools initiative:  TENDERFOOT for transition year students and those initial volunteers have stayed with us until graduation from third level.

We rely heavily on the dedication and commitment of our ushers to ensure you, our patrons, have a great night out. Over the next few weeks in our blog, we offer you the chance to get to know a bit more about them.  Next  up its Ruth…..  Check out the rest of the “Meet the Ushers” interviews here.

Where are you from?
I am from Walkinstown.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I am 20 years old and study English and Sociology in UCD. I love writing especially for theatre.

How long have you been volunteering at the Civic?
I have been volunteering in the Civic for since 2015.

What’s your favourite part about working in the Civic ?
I love theatre so watching the plays is of course a big bonus but my favourite part of working here is the people. The Civic has the loveliest staff I’ve ever met and I enjoy talking to the customers about the shows they’ve come to see.

Have you any behind the scenes stories?
One day the comedian Pat Shortt was performing in the auditorium and he never told any of the staff that one of his sketches involved a funeral. I was sitting in the office during the performance when suddenly I saw a group of audience members carrying a coffin from the auditorium to the cafe. My manager and I just sat there in shock.

What’s the best show you have seen at the Civic?
The show that stood out for me the most was “The Pillowman”. It was well written and the actors were brilliant but the thing that made it so memorable was that whenever the protagonist told a story, the stage would move and open up to reveal different things including a section dropping away to reveal a glass coffin when someone was buried alive.

What are your future plans?
I am a writer and hope to produce my own plays in the Civic one day.

Tell us 1 random fact about yourself?
I am the shortest member of staff in the Civic.

Thanks Ruth….. the shortest and definitely the sweetest!
