First produced over 20 years ago in Australia, Faulty Towers the Dining Experience has sold out in places like Edinburgh Fringe Festival and Sydney Opera House. The show returns to the Civic, where it made its Irish Premiere in June 2009. We got chance to get to know the cast a bit better! First up it’s Rob Langston who plays Basil.
Can you tell us a little but about your background and where you grew up?
I grew up in Southampton in the South of England and ended up going to study Marketing in University in West Yorkshire and ended up in the World of Sales and Market Research in London. I’ve always been interested in Comedy and performance and during the time I was working full time in the world of business, I got involved working in writing and production with my best friend and through our projects managed to get in front of the camera and found my love for acting. After studying it a little bit more through part time courses, decided to give up my job and train full time at Drama School.
Tell us about your background in performing?
I trained at Drama Studio London for two years, after graduation and working on a few different theatre and film projects, I was lucky enough to land the role of Basil in Faulty Towers the Dining Experience. Life has not been the same since!
What has been your career highlight to date?
Career highlights have all been around Faulty. I would have to say being interviewed by the late, great Terry Wogan has to be one of them, also performing the show at such iconic venues as the Sydney Opera House and Royal Albert Hall has to be right up there too.
What can audiences expect from the show?
Expect the unexpected! Imagine being surrounded by the reality of being served dinner by Basil, Manuel and Sybil…and all that entails. Everything that can go wrong, will go wrong. It’s like actually being part of an episode of the show with a mixture of the familiar and totally new.
What other TV comedy shows do you enjoy?
Anything that’s silly! I love Father Ted, Blackadder, Monty Python, Big Train and anything that makes me hide behind the cushion squirming like curb you enthusiasm, The Office, that kind of thing.
