Anita Reeves and Stephen Brennan in These Halcyon Days by Deirdre Kinahan (photo Patrick Redmond) (3)With the current heat wave one could be right in thinking that a play indoors would be the last thing you would want to do on an evening of 29 degrees, well you would be wrong! In These Halcyon Day’s case anyway. Such was the draw of this play, the actors performed to a packed house last night in The Civic.

Fresh from a successful run in New York, These Halcyon Days is back to tour Ireland and runs in The Civic until Saturday, 13th of July.  Written by Deirdre Kinahan the play features Anita Reeves and Stephen Brennan as Patricia and Seán, unlikely friends drawn together by circumstance (they are both residents of a nursing home) who bond over music, dancing and the peculiar condition that is life.  Patricia is a recent resident whose passion and energy rubs off on Sean to the point of getting him out of his wheelchair and even shimmying a few moves!

The pair discuss life, love and regret over tea, cream cornets and Mozart.  Stephen Brennan’s physical portrayal of Seán, a man much older than himself is flawless, his movement ever increasing with Patricia’s good influence.  This is definitely an uncanny pairing and you will know why when you see the play.  Anita Reeves is superb as the bubbly Patricia who ‘never had time’ for love and is now looking back on that aspect of her life with a little remorse, emphasizing one of the themes of the play – you can never be too busy for love and life – it’s gone in an instant don’t let it slip away.

Don’t miss your chance to see this heart-warming play in the Civic.  Despite the context of old age and failing bodies, this play injects a palpable energy into the audience and reminds us that no matter where we are in life there is always time for joy and laughter.
