Mary McEvoy has graced our screens for 17 years in Glenroe as the indomitable Biddy Byrne. Throughout her time at Glenroe, Mary appeared in many theatre productions and in 2001, she left Glenroe and went on to perform in The Field, Shirley Valentine and Dancing At Lughnasa. Most recently Mary could be seen in The Vagina Monologues, The Ballroom of Romance and Mrs. Whippy. She is a regular contributor to TV3’s Midday panel, The Tom Dunne Show on Newstalk radio, and a regular spokesperson for various mental health issues organisations. 2014 has seen Mary cast in Desolate Heaven and John B.Keane’s Moll at The Gaiety Theatre.
We had a quick chat with Mary in advance of her starrring in John B.Keane’s The Matchmaker alongside Jon Kenny at The Civic from Monday, 15th – Saturday, 20th September.
Describe yourself in three words:
Feisty, scared, curious.
What’s your favourite colour?
At the moment it’s crimson. But I love black and emerald green too, oh and violet!
What was your favourite childhood television program?
The Lone Ranger mostly because of Tonto and Silver the Horse. The Lone Ranger was a boring old fart!
Are you a collector of anything?
God no! I lose everything eventually. In fact, I want to become a minimalist.
Are you a morning or night person?
Morning definitely. In fact, I love being in bed early with a good man – Book, book, I mean book!
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live?
Oh the south of France. I just love it there. But not on a permanent basis. Too fond of my home here.
If you could take three things to a desert island what would they be and why?
I would hate it on a desert island but if pushed, my fella, a solar powered generator, and a Kindle with 5000 books on it…
What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever gotten?
Take responsibility for everything that happens to you. It really puts you in the driving seat. Needless to say I didn’t take it. Doh!
What is your favourite movie quote?
I don’t know if she said it in a movie but Mae Wests line “I used to be snow white but I drifted” is good.
Favourite Beatle – John or Paul?
Keith Richards
