Blackwater Babble from Broken Crow Theatre Company is at The Civic 28 – 30 Jan.
Ronan Fitzgibbon’s Blackwater Babble is built from the bones of a ballad. Its unnamed hero has marked his life out in singsongs, sailing up and down the Blackwater River, hoping to find the formula for storytelling through song. Blackwater Babble stars Gary Gary Murphy alsongside the Irish Times Award Nominee John McCarthy. We had a chat with John in advance of the show.
Can you tell us a bit about your background? Where did you grow up?
I grew up in West Cork and moved to Cork City when I was about 7. I lived in London for three years but otherwise have been in Ireland.
Tell us about your acting background, have you always performed?
Yes I suppose I have, like almost everyone, always performed. I liked doing accents and impressions when I was a child, and that turned into a way to show-off in school. From there I was already firmly on the path, and found that even when the showing-off aspect faded away a little there were many other benefits of acting.
What can Tallaght audiences expect from the show?
Two people, in a boat, for about an hour, with plenty of songs, laughter, a few tears and a minor fire…

What’s next for you?
Work on WHALE, my new play that’s in development as part of my residency at Cork Opera House. It’s entering an exciting phase!
