Irish Pink Floyd
Described as ' A musical and visual feast for the Pink Floyd fanatic as well as the casual fan alike'. The Irish Pink Floyd presents a show that combines the very best of Pink Floyd's back catalogue with the extravagance of their legendary live shows. The Irish Pink Floyd set list for 2007 includes songs from The Dark side of the Moon, Animals, Wish you were here, The Wall and The Final Cut. Visually the show is stunning, with the largest sound and lighting system currently on tour in Ireland. The Irish Pink Floyd are a six-piece band who rock out Pink Floyd's non-singles as frequently as the hits, The Irish Pink Floyd has managed to recapture to perfection the musical skills and stage theatrics of the band that has influenced generations..

The Legend of Luke Kelly
On 30th January 1984 it is said that the whole of Dublin grieved the early death of Luke Kelly. He had left an indelible mark as being one of the greatest Irish folk artist of the 20th Century.
In October 2001 a band formed to pay tribute to the king of balladeers in a show entitled ‘A Tribute to Luke Kelly’. It was launched in Dublin’s Hotpress HQ before an audience which included Luke’s siblings and relations and proved to be such a success that the band was booked for a three month residency at the Olympia theatre. They then made a memorable appearance on RTE’s Open House and were the only band to perform on Eamon Dunphy’s radio show ‘The Last Word’. The band has since amazed audiences with powerful performances in prominent venues. Lead singer Chris Kavanagh bears a remarkable resemblance to Luke whilst his singing talents capture the depth and passion of the great man. He is joined on stage by accomplished musicians who all consider it an honour to bring Luke’s memory back to the live stage. This is a concert not to be missed.

DANCE

Ballet Ireland present

Choreographic Platform

Whereas just a century ago, a choreographer was considered simply he or she responsible for putting various dances together, today’s great choreographers are recognised as true artists and visionaries. Our annual choreographic showcase performance is an are important events on Ballet Ireland’s calendar. Through the showcase, aspiring young choreographers are given time and encouragement to develop their ideas. They are able to work with professional dancers, are provided with studio and rehearsal facilities and finally, their work is presented to the public in a thorough and professional setting.
Like all art forms, ballet needs to be constantly developing, but in a discipline so firmly rooted in tradition, this development needs to be carefully nurtured.
A process of analysis, re-thought and re-creation of existing work is one way in which this development can take place and another way is through innovation, new thought and new choreography. By encouraging young artists to explore the world of making dance in an atmosphere conducive to inspiration and creativity, Ballet Ireland remains at the vanguard of the development of ballet in Ireland.
This years performance is a programme developed from the showcase and combined with 2 pieces from Ballet Ireland's repertoire, Bamboo Spring and Irish Rhapsody.

Don Baker

We are delighted to announce the return of Don Baker to the Civic Theatre this summer. He is a survivor. Desperate conditions during his 1950's childhood saw him hospitalised with Tuberculosis at age 7 and then drift into petty crime as a child and young adult which brought him in and out of remand homes until age 19. While in hospital Don came upon a harmonica player and was quickly charmed by the instrument. He then acquired a harmonica of his own and drove the matron crazy. It could be said that hospital introduced Don Baker to the harmonica; prison to the guitar and inner-city Dublin tenement life to the blues. Leaving Ireland for the continent of Europe aged 22; he travelled throughout Germany, Austria, Holland and France, playing all the while. He moved on to jazz and blues clubs and the odd support slot at a major concert, with the help of a newly acquired agent. Ten years was spent on the road, going from country to country. In 1979 he was asked by the Late Late Show, to write a song about inner city Dublin. Don wrote 'Dublin's Inner City' which became a huge hit for The Jolly Beggarmen reaching No. 1 in the Irish charts. Baker has since built a wide reputation as a harmonica player. Mark Feltham (who has played with Oasis, Joe Cocker and Rory Gallagher) rates him as the greatest acoustic harmonica player in the world, as does Charlie McCoy and U2's Bono.

Frank Pig Says Hello
by Pat McCabe
Directed by Joe O Byrne

Frank Pig Says Hello tells the story of a young boy's violent breakdown in a rural Irish town 'Frank Pig Says Hello' is the theatre version of the Pat McCabe novel, 'The Butcher Boy' - about a cheerfully deranged delinquent growing up in rural 1960s Ireland. Originally staged in the 1992 Dublin Theatre Festival, McCabe's adaptation of his own novel The Butcher Boy was a phenomenal success, and has since been recognised as a hugely important and influential work in the context of contemporary Irish theatre. A grotesque mixture of story-telling and role-play, this darkly comic tale has established itself as one of the most memorable narratives of modern Irish writing (and indeed performance).

McCabe has reconceived his work in a highly theatrical manner, as a sort of hallucinogenic music-hall routine, performed by two actors who represent the work's title character, Frank, as the boy he was, and the narrator who remembers him.

The story focuses on the character of Francie Brady - Piglet - a troubled boy struggling to come to terms with himself, his family and ultimately, his entire surroundings. Piglet's childhood is also encumbered by an embittered, alcoholic father, and a manically depressed mother. So with his father in and out of the pub, and his mother in and out for treatment, Piglet is forced to look elsewhere for human nourishment. Shunned by the local townspeople, he struggles with his sense of loss and pain as his fantasies become ever more grotesque and his behaviour more and more threatening.

NEW YORK TIMES REVIEW
Pat McCabe once again demonstrates a bracing spirit of experimental daring.

Moodswings

Join Nyle Wolfe and band for an unforgettable evening of timeless classics. The internationally acclaimed Irish baritone sings songs from his top selling album ‘Moodswings’ accompanied by a trio of the country’s leading musicians. Evoking memories of the Rat Pack and the Three Tenors, with the modern feel of il Divo and Josh Groban, the repertoire is an eclectic combination of jazz standards, popular songs and classical favourites old and new. The songs are the artist’s personal choice but the set list has evolved based on audience reaction during sell-out concert tours and performances both in Ireland and throughout Europe.

“His vocal command and stylish musical delivery set a standard that the rest simply do not reach” The Irish Times

“Wolfe was splendid. His high baritone voice is mellow, his diction is magnificent and his comic timing perfectly judged” The Irish Examiner

Greenhills Variety Group present
Thoroughly Modern Millie

Set in 1922, the story revolves around the adventures of Millie Dillmount, who escapes to New York City from Salina, Kansas determined to marry her wealthy boss - whoever he may be. Shedding her country girl image for the modern look of a "flapper", she takes a room at the Priscilla Hotel for Women and gets a job as a stenographer at the Sincere Trust Insurance Company. In short time, she finds herself involved with Jimmy Smith, an apparently ne'er-do-well paper clip salesman, Miss Dorothy Brown, a genteel aspiring actress who never seems to have spare change, Trevor Graydon, her no-nonsense boss, and Muzzy van Hossmere, a madcap heiress with a zest for the high life.

The Priscilla Hotel proves to be a front for a white slavery ring, headed by Mrs. Meers, the property's proprietor, and her two bumbling Asian henchmen. Her ideal target is an attractive orphaned girl with no family who won't be missed if she suddenly disappears. Millie, who gets mail from home on a regular basis, is hardly a likely candidate, but Miss Dorothy (as she insists she be called), who hasn't a soul in the world, is perfect.

When Millie puts two-and-two together and realizes what has transpired, she devises a harebrained scheme to save her friend from the clutches of the white slavers before Miss Dorothy is shipped to the Far East. Before long, Jimmy's in drag, Trevor is drugged, and fireworks are exploding everywhere in Chinatown, with all the chaos eventually leading to a happy ending.

Die Fledermaus – The Ballet

The Scene
19th century Vienna: the Eisenstein household, a ball, and the city jail

The Story
Die Fledermaus, a delicious story of intrigue, love, humour and revenge, which lends itself perfectly to the medium of ballet. It promises to be a wonderful vehicle for Ballet Ireland.

Gabriel von Eisenstein does not let his marriage to Rosalinde stand in the way of frequent dalliances with the lithe young ladies of the corps de ballet. The light-hearted story of Die Fledermaus tells of the revenge taken by a certain Dr. Falke (Die Fledermaus) on Gabriel von Eisenstein for playing a practical joke on him. On his way to serve a brief jail term for insulting a public official, Eisenstein attends Prince Orlofsky’s ball where the fun is fast and furious. He woos a glamorous Hungarian countess, who turns out to be none other than Rosalinde, seeking—and getting—her revenge for her husband’s indiscretions. Identities are unveiled, and confusion illuminated in the final scene when Eisenstein philosophically declares, it's best to blame it all on the champagne!

The Country Boy
By John Murphy

Big Telly kicks off its Twentieth Year with a production of The Country Boy by John Murphy, bringing together the company’s contemporary approach to popular Irish Classics and its reputation for theatrical innovation and visual flair.

This bittersweet family drama focuses on two brothers, Eddie, living the American dream and Curly, stuck in the muck, working the family farm and fighting with his father. After fifteen years away, Eddie brings his wife back home to meet the folks and take Curly back with them, prompting a flurry of new curtains, posh napkins and panic about what they’ll eat - she’ll never have seen anything like the spuds and cabbage we have… At first it seems that the former country boy is now a high flyer in the land of opportunity, but layers reveal more layers and maybe the grass turns out to be not quite so green on the other side of the fence after all. This beautifully written and uplifting play perfectly captures the comedy and heart-break of family life, and has much to say to anyone who’s ever thought about staying here, or going away, or coming back. Breathe in that country air – it’ll do you good….

As the guys begin living together, memories are evoked of the last time they shared accommodation, for a summer in Manhattan sixteen years ago, when they both worked in a restaurant to earn their college fees, and sang male duets together to impress girls.
The story flashes between the present and the past, as both guys try to sort out each other’s messy lives. Trousers promises to be a touching, witty night at the theatre.

Galloglass Theatre Company Presents
Way To Heaven
By Juan Mayorga
A New Translation by David Johnston of CAMINO DEL CIELO
Directed by David Horan

Based on a real life incident which took place in a concentration camp during World War II, Way to Heaven is undeniably relevant and chillingly resonant in today’s world of embedded war correspondents and the political spin doctor.  An Irish Red Cross volunteer tours the Jewish “Civilian” camp in Nuremberg to report on the conditions of the “dwellers”.  He finds a flawless, picturesque settlement. But how this deception, involving hundreds of obedient Jews, is created and maintained by a determined Nazi Commandant is the play’s real and devastating concern.  David Johnston’s fine and lucid translation emphasises, starkly, the propensity of human beings to blind themselves to the fate of their fellow humans, whilst all the while ensuring that Mayorga’s words resonate strongly in the ears of today’s audience.
